The lawyer’s words echoed in Daniel’s ears: "You need to leave." He crumpled the notice in his fist, a futile act of defiance. He’d poured everything he had into this place. He stared at his hands, hands that felt numb, his whole body was numb. The silence of the apartment was suffocating, broken only by the frantic beat of his own heart. He wanted to scream. He wanted to weep. His legs felt heavy, as if made of lead, as he managed to walk to the window to look at the world outside.
